What does it really mean, that “God will fight for me, and I need only to be still?” (Exodus 14:14)
I don’t know about you, but in the literal sense, this sounds absolutely amazing. I’m too tired to do anything anyway. So great, I’ll be still. Shoot, I could use a nap too. “God take it. Take it all, and THANK you very much!”
Just scribbling out these words, I felt the pressing weight lift with a release of burdensome pressure… In fact, I think I took my first full breath of the day. Shewee!
Plopped down on my bedroom love-seat I caught a peek of a blinking cursor across the room on my laptop screen. Half full of typed thoughts, waiting to be filled in time for a dwindling deadline, but stranded by a girl, escaped to stillness… too tired to think, much less type or fight.
I couldn’t decide how God was going to pull off finishing that paper with me just sitting there, being “still” and all, rattling off my reflective, confused, and weary thoughts.
Have you ever wanted a supernatural intervention to get your work done and fight your fight too? Do you want the “be still” part so stinking bad you’re pleading for relief?
Here’s what I’ve concluded though. I think it IS time for us to be still. But most importantly still at heart. A stillness, peace, and calm in a soul clinging closer to God. Asking him for renewed strength, insight, direction, and a restored spirit. And it’s in that closeness, we fill up on his rejuvenating presence.
Maybe he will send some supernatural sort of help or real life earth angel to do the work for you. But, either way, when you soak in his presence, you can count on him to give you just what you need… to tackle the task he’s called you to.
So yes, let’s be more still. Be still with him, and still at heart… As he fights your battles by lifting you up and carrying you through.
Reflect:
Are you dying for stillness and calm? Could you use some help fighting your fight?
Pray:
Dear Lord Jesus, My body is overworked and my soul craves restorative rest. I need your stillness. Please fill my heart with your peace, and my spirit with your strength. So that together we can take on the tasks you’ve prepared and called me to. Thank you for always lending me just what I need. In your trustworthy, gracious name, Amen.
Seek the Word:
The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still. (Exodus 14:14 ) But you shall cling to the LORD your God just as you have done to this day. (Joshua 23:8) I will be your God throughout your lifetime— until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you. (Isaiah 46:4)
